Older Adult Services offers programs which assist older adults to maintain their independence and quality of life.  The information about these services/programs follows.  The AVL, S.C.I.L.S. , ADL and Eye Screening components assist residents in the counties of Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Golucester, and Salem.  Funding for these programs is from a grant from the Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired.  Project S.A.V.E. assists residents of Atlantic County and is funded by a grant from the Atlantic County Division of Intergenerational Services.

Services are provided at no cost.

Adjustment to Vision Loss (AVL)

The goal of the Adjustment to Vision Loss program is to improve the provision of mental health services to individuals who are blind or visually impaired and are adjusting to their vision loss. Training and education is also provided for mental health professionals who treat the visually impaired and/or family members, spouses and significant others. Educational programs and support groups are provided for family members of those persons who are visually impaired. Linkage to other appropriate agencys/groups for mental health counseling and peer support is also provided. Peer group volunteers and peer counselors are recruited and trained in each of the seven counties. To contact the AVL Program call (609) 652-1600 ext 2226

Project Prevention

Eye screenings are conducted at various locations throughout the service area. Individuals with specific conditions and those identified as "at risk of glaucoma" are referred to an eye specialist. Follow up is conducted to ensure that those at risk follow through with visits to their eye specialist.  To contact Project Prevention call (609)652-1600.

S.C.I.L.S (Senior Community Independent Living Services)

The S.C.I.L.S. program serves the special needs of adults who are experiencing vision problems. The program identifies isolated, under-served clients who need the services of the Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired and links them to those services. The program also provides volunteer companion services, case management and counseling for the clients as well as advocacy services and peer support through Visually Impaired Persons (VIP) self-help groups. Participants must be age 55 or older and have a visual acuity of 20/70 or less in the best eye with correction.  To contact the SCILS program call (609)652-1600.

ADL (Activities of Daily Living)

The ADL program offers skill development training to help participants increase their functioning and independence in their own homes. Participants must meet the same eligibility requirements as a SCILS customer.  To contact the ADL program call (609)652-1600.

Project S.A.V.E (Service Assistance through Volunteers for the Elderly)

This program offers respite to caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias.  Trained volunteers will give respite for the caregiver for 1-3 hours each visit.  Either the caregiver or care receiver must be 60 years of age or older to be eligible for this service.
